CHASING WILDFLOWERS

POINT REYES, CALIFORNIA

NICOLE KNOX

A lot of people come out to Point Reyes to see the shipwreck, the tunnel of trees and the light house, but this is my favorite spot, Chimney Rock. It is a short mile hike through beautiful rolling hills with the coastline surrounding you.

Every time I have visited Point Reyes it has been during the spring, so everything was incredibly green and the wildflowers are everywhere! They aren't those tall yellow ones, they are tiny dainty flowers that line the trail as if someone planted them. I watch so many people walk about 3/4 of the hike and then decide to turn around before the end, please don't do that ! It seriously shouldn't even be called a hike, it's just a significant walk. The walk is totally worth it, its an extremely romantic spot actually. The hillsides are covered in beautiful little flowers and they lead you to a gorgeous ledge that gives you the most amazing view in every direction... even in the fog!

Yes, it's foggy and a little rainy, but it's not freezing cold. I wore my Chaser hoodie all day and I was never uncomfortable.  Super easy to layer with and thin enough to wear underneath a big jacket. This sweatshirt is a great item to pack on any trip, especially this time of the year. I wear a size small and it is plenty long enough all around.

The day that we drove out to Point Reyes the storm was really rolling in and it was ridiculously foggy. The fog was so thick it might as well have been raining. Anyways, because the fog was so thick it was pretty difficult to see the coastline but when you get up close you can see much more than you thought.  There are always elephant seals hanging out at the first little lookout point to the right or at the end of the trail on the left side. You will usually hear them before you see them, they sound like shrieking women, it can really fool you sometimes! If you've never seen an elephant seal before you are really in for a surprise. They are absolutely massive, the males look like beached wales, they are huge! I once heard a little girl describe them to her mom that they looked like mermaid cows, I don't know about you, but I like that way better than the name elephant seals.

This spot is full of wildlife and gorgeous scenery from every angle. No matter where you look, you will find a new view that was better than the last. If you decide to venture out to Point Reyes, you have to stop at Chimney Rock!
